It isn’t a type-o. It is a revelation… at least for me it
was.
“For I long to see
you, that I may impart unto you some spiritual gift, to the end ye may be established; That is, that I may
be comforted together with you by the mutual faith both of you and me.”
Romans 1:11-12
The word translated in the King James as may
be established is stērizō.
It sounds like stereo because it is like it. In fact stereos (in
the Greek) is a synonym for it.
Everything sounds
better in stereo than it does through one speaker only.
And that is what
Paul is getting at.
When he wrote to all
that be in Rome he wasn’t just saying that he couldn’t wait to get there to
tell them a thing or two… but to hear from them as well.
There is something to be said for sharing your faith with a
friend. There is something to be said for having a friend that you can speak to
about the things of God… the things that matter most.
There is something to be said about two brothers in Christ
being comforted together.
Sometimes the spiritual gift that we can impart unto others,
or receive from them, is as profoundly simple as a word.
It can be a testimony. A word of encouragement. A reminder
of what we have heard before.
“Tell me what you know of God.”
When two come together and share their “of God” stories… our testimonies… then we are strengthened… in
stereo.
I have to admit that sometimes I feel a burden to share what
I have seen God do… what I believe I have heard from Him… what I have come to
realize of Him through His Word.
And sometimes… I really need to hear someone else sharing. I
need that comfort. I need that establishment.
I was hooking up the surround sound to the TV the other day
and one of the wires was off. And so, we couldn’t hear the voice coming
through. We heard stuff… background sounds… waves crashing… but not the voices.
And I believe that sometimes we have just been given the
background sounds… we are absolutely hearing from God… but the voices… maybe
they are coming through someone else. And we both need to be speaking with each other to hear the whole picture.
Only in the Kingdom of God could you hear a picture.
And faith comes by hearing.
If you haven’t had the chance to ask someone lately, “What
do you hear God saying?” Then be deliberate in it. Find someone you know hears
from Him and ask.
And then listen.
Even if they say, “I don’t really hear words… but I keep
getting a picture of…” You can be sure that it has a part.
So keep looking… and listening. For God has no respect of
persons… He speaks to all.
And so He wants us to as well.
That I may be
comforted with you by the mutual faith both of you and me.
