“And Moses said unto Joshua, Choose us out men, and go out, fight with Amalek: to morrow I will stand on the top of the hill with the rod of God in mine hand. So Joshua did as Moses had said to him, and fought with Amalek: and Moses, Aaron, and Hur went up to the top of the hill. And it came to pass, when Moses held up his hand, that Israel prevailed: and when he let down his hand, Amalek prevailed. But Moses' hands were heavy; and they took a stone, and put it under him, and he sat thereon; and Aaron and Hur stayed up his hands, the one on the one side, and the other on the other side; and his hands were steady until the going down of the sun.” Joshua 17: 9-12
Moses was not a man free of mistakes or imperfections. He was a murderer and a coward. He showed moments of lacking faith. He had problems with delegating his authority. (Jethro helped on that one!) He stuttered. He questioned God.
But when he lifted his hands… when he exercised the authority God gave him in an act of both surrender and worship… God brought victory.
Aaron and Hur had one job… to lift up the arms of Moses. They were there to support him… to reinforce his authority… the position God had given him.
When they did that… Israel was invincible.
Moses said he would stand… a position of power.
But God had him sit… a position of authority.
Moses did have the rod… he had been given the power.
But Aaron and Hur supported him… helping him exercise it.
Moses was called from Egypt to a desert… and back to Egypt. People grumbled at Moses when things went wrong. But did they cheer when things when right?
I don’t think Moses’ arms were tired from lifting the rod… I think they were tired from carrying Israel… from the burden required of one man… from the responsibility.
From the frustration.
Are you like Aaron and Hur? Do you support those whom God has placed in authority? Do you help them exercise their gift… their position?
When they lifted Moses’ arms there were six hands now lifted to the Lord. Six hands lifted in surrender. Six hands lifted in worship. Six hands positioned to receive.
We are in a spiritual battle. We are not to follow blindly… but we are called to support. We are called to lift up our leaders… in prayer… with patience… and perseverance.
Knowing that if it is God Who has given them their authority… when we help them to exercise it… we as a Body will be invincible.
For the battle belongs to the LORD… and it has already been won.
It only took three nails.
But as we walk in this life… in occupied territory… we need to fight from that place of victory.
Join with me in prayer today as we lift up those Whom God has called to shepherd… Whom He has given to us as a gift.
And do it in thanksgiving, in worship… joyfully.
