NASCAR Christianity

I remember reading or hearing somewhere that more people watch a single NASCAR® race each week than do the Super Bowl.

I don’t know if you are a fan but until a few years ago I didn’t even know what the acronym meant.  So I went into the maintenance shop where I used to work and asked.

About eight guys simultaneously let me know…

National Association of Stock Car Auto Racing.

With such a massive following you have to ask yourself (or at least I did)…

What can the Church learn from NASCAR®?

  1. We need to work as a team.  While there are some great and famous drivers… it is all about the points.  Team standings are what matters and often there is a strategy that gets more team points than individual glory.  If driver is only is in it for themselves they will ultimately fail.  It is about helping each other succeed that makes you succeed.

  1. You meet less resistance when you are in the draft. A “draft” is when you drive directly behind someone else – literally inches away – which cuts down on the wind resistance you face.  You burn less fuel… your engine doesn’t have to work as hard… and it positions you to accelerate when needed.  Sometimes there will be people who are gifted to lead in an area… sometimes they will have momentum, experience, passion… and that will push them out in front… into a place of anointing and ordination.  Get behind them!  It isn’t a place of secondary position… it is a place of alignment that helps you to move forward faster than you could before!

  1. Follow the experienced driver through the turns.  The guys who have been around a long time… they know the track… they understand the turns.   If you want to increase the chances of making it through the turn… stay in their mirror.   They have learned from their mistakes (we hope) so maybe we should learn from them as well so we don’t have to make them ourselves.

I am sure there are many more things we can get from watching a race.

Like when it is safe and best to pass…

Or how you should never… NEVER… hit the brakes when others are on your tail…

That sometimes… you need a pit stop…

But one thing that dawned on me is this…

If we… as the Body of Christ… could just do the three things that are numbered… we would gain endurance.

We would be stronger as a Body.

We would be running a race that people would watch.

Sure there would be a few who want to see us crash.

But many more want to see us finish.  They want to see us live what we believe.

They want to believe that they can join our team and succeed.

Together.

It is not a matter of gaining eternal life.

It is about glorifying God with this one.

Just like the guys who answered my question about the acronym… we would demonstrate unity.

I can hear the engines revving at the Heaven 500 now.
