Think like Abraham

"And being not weak in faith, he considered not his own body, now dead, when he was about an hundred years old, neither yet the deadness of Sarah’s womb…” (Romans 4:19)

God had made Abram a promise… a promise that would take years to fulfill.  A promise that seemed impossible that would lead him down a path that seemed impassible.

And with the promise came a cost… Abram’s very identity was changed… He became Abraham… father of nations.

The thing was… he wasn’t the perfect candidate for the name change… at least in man’s terms.  Sure, he might have been easily cast in a play as the grandfather, or maybe Father Time… but to be a daddy, at his age… not likely.

The thought even made his wife laugh.

But God had made a promise to him.  A promise that Abraham wanted to be fulfilled.  He wanted a son.  He wanted to be the father of nations.  He didn’t care what people thought, and  he knew something important…

Abraham knew that as a man thinks in his heart, so he is. (Proverbs…)

While others laughed and gave him the looks – “Hey there goes the old couple, shopping for cribs again!” – while they doubted his sanity and probably patronized him with “encouragement” that came from empty hearts…

Abraham was determined to see that promise fulfilled.   And so he made the decision to ignore the “facts” that all the smart people could list.  He made the decision to not consider (think about) all of the obstacles he faced and to think about the One who made the promise and His ability to do the impossible.

Has God made you a promise?  A promise that seems impossible?  A promise that you want Him to fulfill?

If He has… consider not…

your age, you financial situation, your experience, your qualifications, your past failures, your past victories (they were His anyway), what others say, what the enemy says, what you would think in your fear, what the stock market says, what the gurus say… (are you getting the picture?)

Consider this… actually be fully persuaded… just as Abraham was…

“that what He had promised, He was able also to perform.” (v. 21)

Grace determines that the fulfillment of God’s promise is based on Who God is… not who we are.

If you think about all of the obstacles… if you think about all of the reasons why something can’t or won’t happen… if you think about how long it has been since you first heard the promise… if you get discouraged and think that it is too late for Him…

Know this…

When it seems too late… He still has time.

May you receive all of the promises He desires to give you and may you think on the beauty, power, provision, grace, and love of our Lord and Savior Who purchased us with His own blood that we may partake of His glory.
