To find the knowledge of God – Proverbs 2:5

My son, if thou wilt receive my words, and hide my commandments with thee; So that thou incline thine ear unto wisdom, [and] apply thine heart to understanding; Yea, if thou criest after knowledge, [and] liftest up thy voice for understanding; If thou seekest her as silver, and searchest for her as [for] hid treasures; Then shalt thou understand the fear of the LORD, and find the knowledge of God.” Proverbs 2:1-5
Theology has been defined by some as man’s study of God.  There are many different variations of the definition, but the word itself, when broken apart literally means God (Theo) study of (logy).
Just as all other scientific studies Theology is a discipline.
But what is the end goal of Theology?  If it is like all other studies it would end in us knowing about God.
But that is not what the Bible says should be the end.
God wants us to have the knowledge of God… meaning that He wants us to know what He knows… He wants us to have His heart – for the mind is in the heart – and He wants us to be like Him, not just know about him.
This is the crux of the whole religion vs. relationship argument.
I want to incline my ear to Him…  I want to apply my heart… I don’t want to just follow rules or maintain habits… I don’t want to just “get in a religious groove” or “go through the motions.”
We are not meant for an autopilot flight of faith.  We are meant to be engaged.  We are meant to experience our life in Christ.  We are meant to go through the turbulence… we are meant to fly above the storms.
We are to awake with His likeness… and so find out satisfaction.
God’s desire for us is to understand Him, not necessarily what He does, or how He does it… but to actually understand His motive… His heart.
For God so loved the world
He loved and continues to love… doesn’t that just blow your mind?  It does mine.
This verse charges us to use all of our senses and abilities – our hands (receive), our ears (incline your ear), our mind (apply your heart), our mouth (cry, lift thy voice), our eyes (seek, search) – to go after God… not just to know about Him, but to know Him!  And if we do this, we are promised that we will find the knowledge of God.
We are here to bring God Glory:  To give Him all acknowledgement and recognition, to cause people to see Him.  We do that through Jesus… by exalting His name and lifting Him high.
We glorify the Son… He glorifies the Father…
The Son draws us into the Father’s presence…
And we get to know Him.
Praise the Lord that we serve a God Who wants us!
