“Wherefore I say unto you, All manner of sin and blasphemy shall be forgiven unto men: but the blasphemy [against] the [Holy] Ghost shall not be forgiven unto men. And whosoever speaketh a word against the Son of man, it shall be forgiven him: but whosoever speaketh against the Holy Ghost, it shall not be forgiven him, neither in this world, neither in the [world] to come. Either make the tree good, and his fruit good; or else make the tree corrupt, and his fruit corrupt: for the tree is known by [his] fruit.” Matt 12:31-33
What is it to blaspheme against the Holy Ghost, commonly called “blasphemy of the Holy Spirit” and how do we know if we have committed it?
Moreover, if Christ died for our sins in fulfillment of the scriptures, and John 3:16 rings through the heavens, and the “whosoever” that come to believe in Him have everlasting life…
How is it, then, that there is a sin that Jesus says cannot be forgiven?
To blaspheme the Holy Spirit is to deny that the Holy Spirit is God.
It is to deny the Trinity… the Godhead.
When Jesus spoke of the blasphemy of the Holy Spirit it was in response to those who claimed that the works Jesus did were of the devil. His final comment, make the tree good, and his fruit good.
Everything Jesus did was in fulfillment.
The Father demonstrated His power through signs and wonders, parting the sea, setting the captives free, establishing the Law.
The Father promised the Son… and the Son came.
And the Son fulfilled the Law and demonstrated the power of God through the works that He did… proving that God was…and that the Son was one with the Father.
The Son promised the Spirit… and He returned to the Father.
And the Spirit came… proving that the Son was One with the Father that they are God.
And the works that those with the Spirit of God, the Holy Spirit, do prove that the Holy Spirit is one with the Son and the Father and that they are God.
If you deny that the Spirit of God, the Holy Spirit, is God then you blaspheme the Spirit of God and cannot have the Spirit of God in you. If you have not the Spirit of God in you than you cannot have the Spirit of Christ, for they are one.
If you have not the Son… you have not the Father (1 John 2:23), and you are none of His.
To deny the Holy Spirit is God is to deny that Jesus is the Christ.
And that is why blaspheming the Holy Spirit cannot be forgiven… because to be forgiven you must believe that Jesus is the Christ. If you believe (act according to the confession) that Jesus is the Christ, the Messiah, the Anointed One, who died for your sins and redeemed you to the Father by His own blood… you have the Holy Spirit.
Confess that that Holy Spirit is God… receive the gifts… and show your faith through the demonstration of the power of God!
