“Who [is] he that condemneth? [It is] Christ that died, yea rather, that is risen again, who is even at the right hand of God, who also maketh intercession for us.” Romans 8:34
There are three levels of intercessory prayer. And each requires a different level of qualification. And those levels of qualification are a reflection of levels of authority.
Why?
Because we are at war… and we are in training… and we are trained to be specialists. What are the levels and how do we get qualified?
The first level of intercessory prayer is when we pray for someone. We are all qualified to do this. We can make mention or remember anyone in prayer at any time for anything. We can all join the conversation at this level. God hears all of these prayers. The rise up as incense and fill the bowls in heaven. We have authority in Christ to talk to Him about anyone, because He starts the conversation.
The next level of intercessory prayer is when we pray on behalf of someone. We are qualified to do this when someone gives us permission to pray for something specific. It usually comes when they say, “Can you pray for me?” It can also come if we ask, “Can I pray for you?” Either way, if we say yes or they say yes… we have authority to pray on behalf of them. That means we can go before God for them, or confront the devil for them. Think of it as if we “be” (are) half of them, we go “with” them.
The next level of intercessory prayer is when we pray in place of someone. How do we get to this level? Life. When we go through something and Christ is victorious in us… like coming through depression, or addiction, or pain, or illness… we claim that victory. Christ is in us. We have overcome. And therefore, victory is ours… the devil can’t take it back. So when someone gives us permission to intercede in prayer in an area of victory in our lives we can essentially say, “OK. You stay here. You don’t have to fight. I’ve already got this victory. I will go in your place as though the victory is already yours and win as you.” That is why Christ it the true Intercessor. Because He already conquered death. When He intercedes for us, He is the only One who is seen, but His jersey has our name on it. We get the victory from His fight!
Where are you qualified to be a level three intercessor? Your testimony should tell you. Pray for others to experience that victory.
Where do you need victory and the battle is too tough… find an intercessor who has already got the victory!
Let us be effective in our prayer by knowing exactly where we can have an effect.
