Power of a blessing

To bless means “to speak well of.”  When we bless the name of the Lord we speak well of it, we give Him the honor and the praise.  We make His name known. For the name of the Lord is greatly to be praised.

And a blessing is powerful.  A blessing is “to continually speak well of.”  It is as though what is said abides.  Why is that important?

Because “Death and life [are] in the power of the tongue:” Prov 18:21

A blessing than is “speaking an abiding life over.”  We need to understand this concept like Abraham did.  Abraham understood the power and reality of a blessing.  He knew that his words mattered, had power, and abided.

This is why he was so distraught when he said, “Thy brother came with subtilty, and hath taken away thy blessing.” Gen 27:35

He knew that his words had already left him and he could not send them elsewhere.  We need to understand this.

Why, because the Lord blesses us.  His Word abides over us.  It is life.  When we understand that we see that all of scripture is for us.  All of the promises He spoke abide over us.  His word is alive.  And because it is, so we can be.

And, we need to understand the power of our words because the opposite of bless is curse.  If blessing is “speaking abiding life over” then cursing is “speaking abiding death over.”

That is powerful.  And that is why we are reminded that we will give an account for every idle (hanging around) word. (Matt 12:36)

Remember the following…

Out of the same mouth proceedeth blessing and cursing. My brethren, these things ought not so to be. Doth a fountain send forth at the same place sweet [water] and bitter?” James 3:10 -11

and the priest shall have in his hand the bitter water that causeth the curse:” Numbers 5:18

We are called to be vessels.  We are filled with the Holy Spirit.  The water that flows from the fountain of the Lord speaks life.

Let us not be filled with bitter water that causes us to speak death.

Know the power of a blessing… do not give them away to those who will not take them, but leave them idle… just hanging around.

Be strategic in your speech.

And bless the name of the Lord.
