If you have ever wondered if prayer is a conversation… I have a story to tell you.
We have a Siberian husky. She is a great dog. And she loves to walk. I would venture to argue that out of the 365 nights available to walk in a year she gets a walk at least 355 of those nights. And I have the great pleasure of being the one to walk her.
One of the things that the Lord has put it on my heart is that when I go on these walks that it should be a time of prayer.
Part of that prayer is to lift up a group of men that He has put on my heart. And, honestly, I typically just pray their names without getting into too much detail.
On one Friday night, while going through the list of men I came to one gentleman and prayed my usual prayer, “For (so-and-so), and his family.” But then, without thinking about it I added, “that You hold Him as You roll him over.” I thought nothing of it and continued down the list of men.
But what happened at church on Sunday blew my mind…
This very gentleman came to the front of the church and asked that we look on the big screen. There on the screen was a picture of a Porsche 911 smashed up and laying upside down on the side of a road.
“This was me yesterday when I rolled my car,” was all he had to say and my spirit leapt!
On Friday the Lord told me to pray that he be held as he was rolled over. On Saturday he “rolled his car.” And on Sunday, I found out about it.
Prayer is a conversation. And it starts with the Lord. When we get a hold of that truth… that even the smallest inclination on our part to even think about praying is in fact the touch of the Holy Spirit giving us unction as to what to say…
prayer changes dramatically.
It ceases to be a one-way monologue and truly becomes a conversation with Jesus. It becomes a time of confession – saying along with the Holy Sprit – rather than a time of simple supplication. Rather than think we are asking the Lord for something, we begin to realize that we are declaring what the Lord is giving us.
How much more certain we become of the power of prayer when realize that even in this daily discipline the Lord can completely take the reigns and allow us to simply enjoy Him.
The next time you pray an odd addition to a typical prayer… be watching for how the Lord will prove Himself to you.
And thank Him for giving you a heads up.
