Someone said this to me today… “I’ve been doing some soul search myself lately.” It is a phrase we hear often. It is often something we will do ourselves.
But there is a real secret to soul searching. Actually there are two things that we need to understand before we can find what we are looking for… two critical questions…
1. What is a soul?
2. Where did it come from?
A soul is something only God can create. It is something more than just the body of a man. It is the very essence of his being. It is the life within him. Even the life that he has and is.
A soul is something that needs to validated… to be valued… to have purpose… to be accepted.
When we say we are “soul searching” we are saying that we are trying to find out who we are, to know that we are valued, to know that our life has purpose and to understand what that purpose is. Somehow we know that we are not a body with a soul… but a soul with a body.
And where does a soul come from?
Let’s see what the word of God says…
“And the LORD God formed man [of] the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul.” Genesis 2:7
It does not say that God breathed and then the dust became a man… man was dust. It was only when God breathed into him the breath of life that be became a living soul.
A soul… your soul… came from God.
You are here because He decided to give you life. You did not just “happen.” You happened on purpose.
But maybe you still just feel like dust. Maybe you feel like an empty shell. Maybe you wonder why your life has gone the way it has gone. Maybe you still have questions. Maybe you are tired. Maybe life has been hard.
Maybe you are doing some soul searching.
Well, the fastest way to find that soul is to go to the One who gave it to you. He is the one with the answers to the questions.
Oh… and by the way… He has something else to say on the matter…
“Come unto me, all [ye] that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls.” Matthew 11:28-29
Rest is more than just relief (click here for more). It has to do with your identity. It has to do with answering the questions…
If you want to come into that greater purpose God has for your life… if you want to have a greater understanding of who you were truly meant to be…
If you want to be assured that all things work together for good, for those who love God, for those who are the called according to His purpose…
Come to Jesus. He gave you your soul… He can give you new life.
Just as physical Adam was still a man before God breathed life into him… You are still a man now.
But if you let God breath His life into you… life through the sacrifice of Jesus on the cross… life that only He – Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior – can give…
If you come to Him and receive Him…
You will not only find the soul you have been looking for… but you will have rest as well.
