Ephesians 5:8

“For ye were sometimes darkness, but now [are ye] light in the Lord” Eph 5:8

Darkness hides things.  It makes things not visible.

For some reason I had thought that it had said that we are in darkness.  I can understand that.  Not yet in the light, walking around in the dark.

But is doesn’t say that. It says we were darkness.  We were it.  We were the thing that made things not visible.

We were hiding things. 

Just as Adam and Eve when their eyes were opened, we realized what we were, and we tried to cover it in our own strength.

But now… in Christ Jesus…

We are light!

Light reveals.  It warms.  It shines.  It draws attention.

Our lives are meant to do that now.  Our sins have been washed away, and with it our shame.

There is no reason to hide, no reason to cover up.  We are to let that Light shine before men.

We are light!

But only in the Lord.

Stay in His grace.  Don’t try to do it in your own strength again.  Don’t return to being the thing that hides, that makes things not visible but remain in His love which, though it is light, still covers a multitude of sin.

Shine on.
