I want to obtain the Lord’s favor. But how can I be good when the word declares that there is none good but God? (Matt 19:17)
Is this some cruel Catch 22? Is this some cruel joke or yet another unattainable rule and task?
No.
It is just that I need to metanoeō (change the way I think).
Good is perfectly in line with the will of God.
In order to be good I must be in line with God’s will. And in order to increase my chances of being in line with His will I should try to find out what it is.
I am sure many things that I can do would be in line with His will… but I can be absolutely certain of this one…
“Dearly beloved, I beseech [you] as strangers and pilgrims, abstain from fleshly lusts, which war against the soul; Having your conversation honest among the Gentiles: that, whereas they speak against you as evildoers, they may by [your] good works, which they shall behold, glorify God in the day of visitation. Submit yourselves to every ordinance of man for the Lord's sake: whether it be to the king, as supreme; Or unto governors, as unto them that are sent by him for the punishment of evildoers, and for the praise of them that do well. For so is the will of God, that with well doing ye may put to silence the ignorance of foolish men:” 1 Peter 2:15
Live out the gospel. Put to silence the ignorance of foolish men.
