Why didn’t the beating kill Jesus?

I recently had the privilege of hearing a pastor from India speak.  He shared many things that deeply moved me.  But it was the way he answered this question that will stay with me forever.
First he said, “I asked the Lord, ‘Lord, if I were beaten that way I would die.  Why didn’t you die?’”
And then he looked at the congregation and asked,
“What are the wages of sin?”
“Death,” was the reply.
He repeated the question two more times, each time with more people joining in the response.
And then it was apparent as he said, “Jesus did not die from the beating because there was no sin in Him.  He HAD to lay down His life willingly.  Satan could not take it!”
I can’t add much to that aside from an “AMEN!”
