They say that people who have been married for a long time begin to resemble one another. It used to be one of those things that were observed but never given a real explanation for.
Then they did some studies that showed that one form of non-verbal communication is to mimic the facial expression of the other person. When we do that we use facial muscles. In essence we are exercising out faces and developing similar muscles and therefore, we begin to resemble one another. Just as if we were both lifting the same weight with the same arm in the same way… are arms would both become muscular and therefore resemble each other.
Ok… enough of that. What does it mean for us as Christians, and why have I named this post “Keep Staring”…
“but we know that, when he shall appear, we shall be like him; for we shall see him as he is.” 1 John 3:2b
When we spend more time staring at Jesus, just spending time in His presence… even when we aren’t speaking out loud, the non-verbal communication kicks in.
We respond to Him… we mimic Him… we smile like He does… we cry when He does… we flex our spiritual facial muscles…
And…
We begin to resemble Him.
We begin to be like Him.
Because we see Him.
So… keep staring. Even when you don’t have the words. Just gaze upon Him.
(it might not hurt to grow long hair and a beard too!... just kidding.)
Then… maybe the world will get a glimpse of Him when they look at us.
Wouldn’t that be cool?
