Christmas isn’t just about Jesus being born…

He told us that He would come…
Behold, a virgin shall be with child, and shall bring forth a son, and they shall call his name Emmanuel, which being interpreted is, God with us.” Matthew 1:23 (Isaiah 7:14)
He told us why He would come…
To this end was I born, and for this cause came I into the world, that I should bear witness unto the truth.” John 18:37
He told us what made Him do it…

What do you think it means to be anointed?

I have heard people say “He is an anointed preacher!” or “that man has an anointing on him!” when they are telling me about their pastor, or about an evangelist.
And it got me to thinking… what is it to be “anointed” or to have “an anointing?”
I believe that the Word of God places a measure of responsibility and accountability on believers.

The sin of Solomon – 1 Kings 11

But king Solomon loved many strange women,… For it came to pass, when Solomon was old, [that] his wives turned away his heart after other gods: and his heart was not perfect with the LORD his God, as [was] the heart of David his father.” 1 Kings 11: 1, 4
King Solomon has been called the wisest man who ever lived.  But he had a vice, and it is a vice that many men have shared.
And I am not just talking about loving many strange women  because that would be too easy for us to say, “that’s not me!” to.
To understand how we are like Solomon… to make sure that we don’t follow him down the path to a heart that is not perfect with the LORD our God… we have to ask ourselves…

Flying in formation – Galatians 6:2

Bear ye one another's burdens, and so fulfil the law of Christ.” Galatians 6:2
Have you ever seen a flock of geese flying in a  V?  I am sure you have.
It is amazing how and why they do what they do.  And we can learn some things from God’s creation (just as He told us we could – Romans 1:20) that can help us to demonstrate the unity and humility that our Lord and Savior Jesus Himself showed.
And in doing so we can fulfill the law of Christ.
How?

The promise of restoration

When God promised Israel that they would occupy the Promised Land, that land took on such importance; as the proof of the promise and, in turn, of their God, that their very identity began to shift from being God’s Chosen People to being Occupants of the Land.  They began to relate so closely to the land itself that they lost sight of what it symbolized, what it represented; the One from Whom it was given.  And so, even though they might have been prospering to the world, the prophet Joel was sent with a strong word.  The locust, the cankerworm, the palmerworm, and the caterpillar all came to ravish the fruit of the land.  Once Israel repented, God restored the “time” that these insects had taken from Israel.
We are part of the promise of Israel; adopted into the royal family of the Prince through His work on the cross.  When we accepted the sacrifice that Christ made of Himself, for us, and believed in Him as our Redeemer, as our own personal Savior, we became His.  We became a child of the promise made to Abraham. Our identity is no longer our own, but His.  In the royal courts of heaven, when our names are read aloud with all the sin that we have committed, the Father does not see us, but His Son; the propitiation required by the Law.  We are covered by the blood of the Lamb, the perfect holy and living sacrifice for our sins.
Why would we, then, seek to find our identity elsewhere?  Why would we, as Israel had done, begin to associate ourselves with that which we do, or own, or occupy?
Should we be surprised if the love of the Lord requires that He will begin to take away our fruit, making the land barren, reducing our borders as well until, as Israel, we repent of our sin; our desire for an identity, for recognition apart from Him?  Of course not.  And when we repent and truly seek to be again seen only as His child He will do what no one else can; He will restore the time that the locust, and the cankerworm, and the palmerworm, and the caterpillar hath taken.
This is a promise of restoration, not just and only of the fruit but of the time.
Only the Author of time, the One Who is outside it, can do this.  Fully and completely restore to us anything that the enemy has taken away.
Before you came to Christ, even before the moment that you are reading this, your life had and continues to have many facets.  Those facets radiate outward.  They start in where your heart lies.  This is who you really are.  Your faith, the One in Whom you have placed your life, your trust, your being.  Then your physical facets, your personal relationships, your heritage, your accomplishments, your calling, your possessions, your past.
Whatever facet of your life that you have given to Him He will bless and multiply, using it for His glory.  Whatever facet your hold on to, that you seek to maintain in your identity, you are at risk of losing.  He will send the locust.  You can choose to recognize that the loss is a chastening from the Lord and turn to him, or you can put your energy into trying to maintain what you believe to be yours.
If you chose to repent and refocus on Him then He will restore the “years” to you.
Is there a relationship that you need restored?  Have you stopped experiencing success in any area of your life that you need restored?  Is your relationship with Him not what it used to be?  He can restore the years to you and it can be as though there was never a lost!
He is the true Restorer of all things.

Bring thoughts into captivity – 2 Corinthians 10:5

Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ;” 2 Corinthians 10:5
Our thoughts impact us more than we realize.  God’s thoughts toward us are for peace and not to harm us. (Jer 29:11)  His thoughts are more than be counted and precious.  (Psalm 139)
As a man thinks in his heart… he is. (Prov 23:7)
We must control our thoughts.  In order to do so we must realize that “a thought” and “to think” are different.
Thoughts start outside of us.  They come to us… either through the Holy Spirit, through the enemy, through outside stimuli (like TV or Internet), or through people (not from people.)
Thoughts are things we receive or accept.
But we choose to think.  And how and what we choose to think on makes all the difference.

Addictions - coming into a new bond: Ezekiel 20:37

If you have ever had an addiction… whether to cigarettes, alcohol, drugs, pornography, gambling, etc… you know how consuming it can be on your life.

You know how controlled by it you become.

You know how you begin to make excuses for it… to justify it… when you come to the conclusion that you can’t control it… when you realize, even privately, that it controls you.
It is a terrible place to be in.  It is a painful place.  You begin to feel terrible.
Ironically, the only thing that eases the pain is that which causes the pain.
You become a slave to your sin (that which dishonors God).
But there is hope… you don’t need to stop being addicted… you just need to change your addiction…

Demonic strongholds in a land – Mark 5:10

And he besought him much that he would not send them away out of the country.” Mark 5:10
Jesus and His disciples came to the land of the Gadarenes where He delivered a man possessed of a legion of demons.  After delivering the man, Jesus cast the demons into the swine.
This passage teaches us a few very important things.

Why God brings you to a desert place – Mark 6:35

And when the day was now far spent, his disciples came unto him, and said, This is a desert place, and now the time [is] far passed:” Mark 6:35
Have you ever been in a desert place?  A place where it is dry… and hot… and seemingly lacking of provision.
The disciples found themselves in a situation like that.  They had followed Jesus.  They stayed with Him.  They trusted Him.
And now… they wondered.
What was He thinking?
Did He realize that all eyes were on Him and the situation didn’t look good?
Did He get side tracked or make a wrong turn and not realize that He had brought them to a desert?  At dinner time?!?

Being healed and made whole – Mark 5:29,34

The story of the woman who had been bleeding for twelve years inspires me.  She was sick.  For a long time.  She had spent all of her money on doctors, but she only got worse.  She had lost everything and was at the end of herself.
She heard that Jesus was in town.   She thought to herself, “If I can just touch His garment…”
How I would love to touch that garment…
Well she did, and Jesus felt the virtue come out of Him and the result was more that I had realized before…

To find the knowledge of God – Proverbs 2:5

My son, if thou wilt receive my words, and hide my commandments with thee; So that thou incline thine ear unto wisdom, [and] apply thine heart to understanding; Yea, if thou criest after knowledge, [and] liftest up thy voice for understanding; If thou seekest her as silver, and searchest for her as [for] hid treasures; Then shalt thou understand the fear of the LORD, and find the knowledge of God.” Proverbs 2:1-5
Theology has been defined by some as man’s study of God.  There are many different variations of the definition, but the word itself, when broken apart literally means God (Theo) study of (logy).
Just as all other scientific studies Theology is a discipline.
But what is the end goal of Theology?  If it is like all other studies it would end in us knowing about God.
But that is not what the Bible says should be the end.

Receiving a prophet in the name of a prophet –Matt 10:41

He that receiveth a prophet in the name of a prophet shall receive a prophet's reward; and he that receiveth a righteous man in the name of a righteous man shall receive a righteous man's reward.”  Matthew 10:41
A while back I heard a man preach on this verse.  Unfortunately… his goal was to get people to “receive” him.  It was self-serving.  It reeked of pride.  And it almost caused me to get up and leave.
It is often when people misuse the Word of God that we begin to get a deeper understanding of what it really means… what it is really telling us.
I have heard many people use this verse out of respect… and that is a good thing.  A culture of honor and an atmosphere of humility go hand in hand and release the power of God.
But a hireling wants all the privileges of being a shepherd without any of the pain.

He agreed with the labourers for a penny - Matthew 20:1-2

For the kingdom of heaven is like unto a man [that is] an householder, which went out early in the morning to hire labourers into his vineyard. And when he had agreed with the labourers for a penny a day, he sent them into his vineyard.”  Matthew 20:1-2
In the kingdom of God… in the field that He owns… we are all called to be day laborers.  Too often we think too much of ourselves.  We think that we have achieved or arrived.  I know that I do.  I get to thinking that I am doing a good job.  Right about then He is gracious to remind me Who is really doing anything.
It is humbling.  I get prideful… puffed up.  I sound arrogant… mainly because I am.  I mistake the boldness I can enjoy in Christ for a few extra reps on the bench.  My strength is my weakness.  And my weakness… my strength.
It is pretty amazing how the kingdom of God works.  It continues to amaze me that He would choose to use someone like me for anything.  I am continually humbled when He uses me where I wouldn’t expect… and doesn’t where I would hope.

Healing all that were oppressed fo thed devil - Acts 10:38

How God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Ghost and with power: who went about doing good, and healing all that were oppressed of the devil; for God was with him.” Acts 10:38
No one who has accepted Christ can be possessed of the devil.  For where light is, there no darkness can be.
But the devil can talk to us… as he did Christ in the desert.  The question is… will we listen?
I want to take a moment to talk about the differences between depression, possession, and oppression.  It is important to find the empowering position we have in Christ in order to free ourselves and others from the work of the enemy.

You should be committed! - Psalm 37:5

While for me this statement can be taken literally and I can be fitted for a nice white jacket with fancy arms… it holds just as true that we should uphold our commitments…. That we should go “all in” when we decide to go in… that we should persevere.
It is also true that there are some things that we need to commit… and in order to do that we need to understand what “to commit” means.
Commit:  place into the protection and care of
Consider the following verses:

Why we thank Jesus when we pray – John 16:23

And in that day ye shall ask me nothing. Verily, verily, I say unto you, Whatsoever ye shall ask the Father in my name, he will give [it] you.” John 16:23
Sometimes it can seem very confusing when we ourselves pray, or hear other people pray and they use the terms God, Father, Lord, and Jesus interchangeably.
While I believe that He hears and answers our prayers because of Who He is and not because of how we ask… there is Biblical grounds for praying a specific way, and with that Biblical grounds for saying, “Thank You Jesus!”

How Daniel interpreted Nebuchadnezzar’s dream – Daniel 2:14-19

Then Daniel answered with counsel and wisdom to Arioch the captain of the king's guard, which was gone forth to slay the wise [men] of Babylon: He answered and said to Arioch the king's captain, Why [is] the decree [so] hasty from the king? Then Arioch made the thing known to Daniel. Then Daniel went in, and desired of the king that he would give him time, and that he would shew the king the interpretation. Then Daniel went to his house, and made the thing known to Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah, his companions: That they would desire mercies of the God of heaven concerning this secret; that Daniel and his fellows should not perish with the rest of the wise [men] of Babylon. Then was the secret revealed unto Daniel in a night vision. Then Daniel blessed the God of heaven.” Daniel 2:14-19
When was the secret revealed to Daniel in a night vision?

By prayer and fasting - Matt 17:21

What does it mean to fast?  What is fasting?  Why is it that some things “goeth not out but by prayer and fasting? (Matt 17:21)
We too often focus on the flesh, even when we think of fasting.  We think of what we are giving up, what we are depriving ourselves of, rather than WHY we fast.
“Fast” and “fasten” share a common meaning.

Eph-pha-tha, Mark 7:33-35

There is a wonderful account, in Mark 7: 33-35,  of a instance when Jesus healed a deaf man.  As Jesus is about to heal the man He looks up to heaven and says "Eph-pha-tha", translated "be opened".  For a long time I read this as Christ commanding the ears of the man to be opened.
But when I read it this time something else seemed to grab hold of me.

If you forgive not men their trespasses, Matthew 6:14-15

For if ye forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you: But if ye forgive not men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses” Matt 6:14-15.
When I come across verses in scripture like this one… they make me think.  In my flesh and what I know of people, there is a tendency to look at verses like this as though our Father in heaven is a harsh judge… as though there is something we have to do in order to be redeemed.  But redemption and forgiveness are not the same thing.

Three times in not always a charm. 2 Corinthians 12:8

For this thing I besought the Lord thrice, that it might depart from me.” 2 Corinthians 12:8
Paul was a great ambassador for Christ.  He preached the truth, was used by God in amazing ways through demonstrations of power in the Spirit… healings… miracles… and yet, he prayed three times and received the following answer,...

The Gospel according to the widow. 1 Kings 17

The story of the widow of Zarephath is well known.  But for those of you who are not familiar with it I will summarize…
There is a famine in the land.  God sands Elijah to a widow in Zarephath to be fed by her.
When Elijah gets there he finds her and asks for water.  As she is going to get it he asks her to make him something to eat.  We’ll pick up the story here…

Proverbs 23:7

I want to dispel any doubt concerning who we are.
We are as we think in our heart.
For as he thinketh in his heart, so [is] he” Prov 23:7a
The world says that we think with our head.  The kingdom says we think in our hearts.   How can that be?  How can our heart think?
Our heads are the hardware.  Our brains are wired a certain way.  But what makes us able to use it?  What makes us able to determine its action?

Numbers 17:1-10

In Numbers 17: 1-10 we read how God told Moses to take a rod for each house of Israel and to lay them in the tabernacle.  The next day Moses was to go into the tabernacle and take the rods out.  The rod that had budded was the rod of the person whom God had chosen.  Well Aaron's rod budded, brought forth flowers and almonds.  Nice story don't you think.  "That's just a story."  "That didn't really happen." (straightway denied)  "Well that was just a story to teach us a lesson about God.  It doesn't matter if it happened or not.  That's not the point." (I want to believe that but I'm smarter than that.  I not a child anymore you know.)  "Holy ___! that really happened.  Cool.  God did that." (The blank is "cow". I can't believe where some of your minds are!)
It happened, and yes we do learn something about God from it.  God brings new life to dead things.  Yes, we learn something of redemption here.

Oh how I love Thy Law.

"Laws were made to be broken."  That is what the world says.  But in the kingdom of God, the kingdom we represent, laws were made to be fulfilled; to be completed.  It was meant to reveal something.
The LAW of God is nothing short of the demonstration of His…

What are you expecting from God: Romans 8:28

I saw this question the other day and it got me thinking.  Some of the responses to it (it was on a forum) didn’t resonate with me.  And so I thought more about it.
Why do people leave Jesus?  Why do people seemingly lose their faith?
Perhaps they do for the same reasons that people leave any relationship…

The key to captivity turned: Job 42:10

Ahh the book of Job.  Poor guy.  Wouldn’t want to be in his shoes.  Why was God picking on him?
I am speaking as a fool.  I know.  And we can spend countless hours pulling amazing and empowering truths from the book of Job.  But I want to focus on one.  I want to focus on the key that Job used to unlock the blessings of heaven.
I call it Job’s key.  And I try to remember it by giving it a price tag; $42.10.  For some reason it is easier to think about a key that cost forty two dollars and ten cents that to say Job 42:10.

Time to drop the nets: John 21

Sometimes I am a lot like Peter.  And, if you are the type who gets feeling like there is more you can be doing, that you HAVE to be doing something, or that you are the type who wonders, “Is He really going to do what I think He is” … then you are too.
Right now, as I write this, I am at the end of my rope.  It has been almost 7 months now since I got laid off.  My business plan for my endeavors… obedience.  It was easy for the first three months...  got a little harder for the next three months.  Now I feel like Pete.
I am getting ancy.  I can’t sit still.  I can’t sit in the upper room anymore.  I have seen Jesus.  I heard what He said, saw what He did, and have been burning ever since.  But now, the walls seem a little closer than before.  It is getting hard to breathe.  If for no other reason, I need to keep busy just to distract myself.  I’m ready to go fishing.

Relying on Jehovah Jireh to provide

There was a man who was about to go on a long trip.  He was going to be away for a while.  Take his wife and child.  Uproot them.  Move to a foreign land.  Have to start up a business from scratch.  Only he didn't know it yet.  And he didn't have much in the old savings account.  But the hitch is this... it was God's plan.  And God is a good planner.
So the rest of the story goes like this.  Three guys show up at his door.  They want to see his son.  Then they pull these boxes out of their coats.  Gold. Nice.  Frankincense.  Sweet.  And myrrh.  Whatever.  Two out of three ain't bad.

Consider the beam... Matt 7:3-5

I have a hard time seeing sometimes.  No matter what I am looking at, no matter how many times I clean the window or wipe off my sunglasses… I still see this annoying obstruction in the corner of my eye.  Do you ever get those?  They can get really annoying.  I find myself with another case of OOM: obstructonius ocularios maximus (more commonly known by its layman’s term “big ol’ beam in the eye”)
And it would appear that the most commonly practiced remedy to this particular diagnosis is to ignore it and try and find someone who is suffering from the early stage of this disease, splintonius ocularios minutus.   (my Latin may be a little rusty here, but work with me.)

Judge Not that Ye Be not Judged - Matt 7

I have a hard time seeing sometimes.  No matter what I am looking at, no matter how many times I clean the window or wipe off my sunglasses… I still see this annoying obstruction in the corner of my eye.  Do you ever get those?  They can get really annoying.  I find myself with another case of OOM: obstructonius ocularios maximus (more commonly known by its layman’s term “big ol’ beam in the eye”)
Judge not, that ye be not judged.” Matt 7:1
And it would appear that the most commonly practiced remedy to this particular diagnosis is to ignore it and try and find someone who is suffering from the early stage of this disease, splintonius ocularios minutus.   (my Latin may be a little rusty here, but work with me.)
And why beholdest thou the mote that is in thy brother's eye, but considerest not the beam that is in thine own eye?  Or how wilt thou say to thy brother, Let me pull out the mote out of thine eye; and, behold, a beam [is] in thine own eye?  Thou hypocrite, first cast out the beam out of thine own eye; and then shalt thou see clearly to cast out the mote out of thy brother's eye.”  Matt 7:3-5
Apparently if the beam is large enough it reaches a specific nerve in our brains that actually causes us not only to ignore it altogether, but then it cuts of the humility center of the brain and we move from conviction, which is an inwardly focused work of the Holy Spirit, and activates the arrogance center of the brain moving us to condemnation, which is an outwardly focused work of the enemy
But look at the verses; all three of them.  Don’t stop at verse 4.  When we do that we miss the point altogether.  God wants the beams and motes out.  He never tells us to leave the splinters alone.  He only tells us that in order for us to be effective in helping someone else through their struggles we have to make sure that we are seeing clearly.  Why?  Because if we try to remove a splinter – very small; delicate operation – without being able to see clearly we will hurt the other person.  We will make it worse.
These three verses have been thrown around in a spirit of condemnation, from both sides.  Enough!  Let the truth of the Word convict us.  We ARE to help each other, but we are always to remember that we are in the same position:  A position of dependence on Christ.
“Let me pull out the mote in thine eye” does not imply that the person with the mote doesn’t know it is there.  The second man can simply be saying, “Can I help?”
Forget thinking about these verses as pertaining to “judging”.  They are about “assisting”.  Judging is Jesus’ job. Our brothers and sisters in Christ have already been tried and convicted in Christ, and He has paid the price.  It is finished.  Now it is about living out our faith.  It is about being the body.
If we look at these verses as verses showing us how to assist one another the message becomes clear… you can’t effectively assist someone with a problem you are currently in.  You have to already have dealt with it in your life to help someone deal with it in theirs.
A recovered alcoholic is likely to encourage his friend not to drink.
A current alcoholic is likely to encourage his friend to have another.  It is a basic principle.
If we look at these verses strategically… between the beams and the splinters… we’ll have plenty of lumber to build the church.

“My grace is sufficient for thee.” 2 Cr 12:9

What is grace?  Grace is God giving us the good that we do not deserve.  We could never deserve it.  We could never earn it.  I have to mention (and give credit to the one who first introduced me to the following acronym, Pastor Phil from Gateway Church) that GRACE can also be understood as

God’s
Riches
At
Christ’s
Expense

Not only do I love that depiction I also believe that it sheds light on another incredible truth, namely that grace was neither available nor active before Christ took upon Himself the penalty of death in the way that it is both available and active since.
As the greatest act of the Father’s grace the Son was sent to die in our (each of our individual) place.  Praise God!  And we, as the redeemed, continually experience the benefits of that single act.  But how has that changed the availability and activity of God’s grace?

O Holy Night original Lyrics

Got his from Wikipedia after my son told me about it.  How incredible is the original English translation of one of my favorite Christmas carols.

Midnight, Christians, it is the solemn hour,
When God-man descended to us
To erase the stain of original sin
And to end the wrath of His Father.
The entire world thrills with hope
On this night that gives it a Savior.

People kneel down, wait for your deliverance.
Christmas, Christmas, here is the Redeemer,
Christmas, Christmas, here is the Redeemer!

May the ardent light of our Faith
Guide us all to the cradle of the infant,
As in ancient times a brilliant star
Guided the Oriental kings there.
The King of Kings was born in a humble manger;
O mighty ones of today, proud of your greatness,
It is to your pride that God preaches.

Bow your heads before the Redeemer!
Bow your heads before the Redeemer!

The Redeemer has overcome every obstacle:
The Earth is free, and Heaven is open.
He sees a brother where there was only a slave,
Love unites those that iron had chained.
Who will tell Him of our gratitude,
For all of us He is born, He suffers and dies.

People stand up! Sing of your deliverance,
Christmas, Christmas, sing of the Redeemer,
Christmas, Christmas, sing of the Redeemer!

For whom he did foreknow - Romans 8:29-30

For whom he did foreknow, he also did predestinate [to be] conformed to the image of his Son, that he might be the firstborn among many brethren. Moreover whom he did predestinate, them he also called: and whom he called, them he also justified: and whom he justified, them he also glorified.”  (Rom 8:29-30)
If God has predestined those to whom He would call to His Son, then is becoming a Christian really a choice?  Has God doomed some men to hell, while others He has called on to heaven?  Is this really the character of a God that we say is all-loving and that is “longsuffering” that “all men might be saved?”
Sounds incongruent.  To be honest… it sounds harsh and unfair.
As with all mysteries of the glorious gospel of Jesus Christ, we are challenged to seek in order to find.  We must have revelation of His word in order to understand the “why” of verses like these; or more importantly the “how could that be?”
How could a God who loves all men only “predestine” certain men to salvation?  I don’t hold the opinion that He does.  I hold the opinion that there have been given poor explanation of the term “predestinate”.  I hold the opinion that men who have not “studied to show themselves approved” may have, even with good intention, answered too quickly with too shallow an explanation that, when tested dried up from the heat.
So I am going to take a crack at laying down my understanding of the verses above.  Notice that I said, “my understanding.”  I speak as a man. For that is all that I am.  But I do desire to know Him and His Word and believe that every verse of scripture is the God-breathed, inerrant word of God.  And so, I take them for what they say and, when my flawed, imperfect, incomplete carnal mind can not at first understand it, I dig deeper, until it seems that this empty vessel might have received something of substance with which to be filled.
We often forget that God is outside of time.  He sees every second of history right now, in His present: from the moment of creation, to the beginning of all things new and beyond.  Those events are not things of the past or the future to Him as they are to us.  We are, in our carnal state, bound by time.  This is a human state.  It is not a constraint of the Divine.  He is the “Was, the Is, the coming King”, the “Alpha and the Omega”, the “Beginning and the End.”  He IS all of those things.  It is not that He WAS the Was.  He IS NOW the Was.  He is eternal.  Seated on the throne His vision knows no constraint of time.
It is as though He is looking at a timeline in which we are bound, but that He sees in its completion.
And so, when we take this perspective and read the verse not as a matter of His imposing His will or decision on us, but rather of His having already observed TIME for each of us we can see that Predestination is the natural result of a loving God Who can’t help but pour out His love and Grace on those who have come to faith in His Son.
We will look into this for further explanation.  First let us look at the Greek words used in the verse and some definitions and applications of each.

Foreknow:   Proginōskō: to have knowledge before hand
Predestinate:  Proorizō:  to foreordain, appoint beforehand, (already apply*)
Called:  Kaleō: to salute one by name
Justified:  Dikaioō: to declare, pronounce, one to be just, righteous,
Glorified:  Doxazō: to cause the dignity and worth of some person or thing to become manifest and acknowledged
* “already apply” is my understanding of the concepts of “beforehand” and “appoint”
Now let us play out a scene.  God the Father Who, when He speaks causes things to come into existence, looks onto the “timeline” of the life of one who will come to faith in Christ.  He sees that moment NOW, even before that person comes forth from their mother’s womb.  God “has knowledge before hand” of the choices they will make and so, when He sees that they will accept His Son in their future that event is a PRESENT EVENT for Him as He is not bound by time.  Therefore He takes every moment of that person’s life and the person themselves and, “already applies” them to the purpose of His kingdom- namely that they would begin to be conformed into the image of His Son.  The logical progression of these events would fall out that if He has “already applied” the effect of the decision that they will, in their future, make then He would “salute one by name”, and what we must realize here is that He salutes each of us not by our birth name, but by the name of His Son, Jesus.  Having done just that – saluted us by the name of Jesus – the power of that name is also “already applied” to us:  What is that power of that name?  We are “declared and pronounced to be just and righteous” in Him.  And since He does not believe in placing a candle beneath a basket He them already begins “to cause the dignity and worth to become manifest and acknowledged.”
Predestination is then God’s gracious response to us not His egotistical fancy to play us as pawns.
Thank you for taking the time to have read this.
“Reading maketh a man broad, speaking maketh a man ready, but writing maketh a man exact.”
Just trying to get to that end.

1 Peter 1:15-16 - Be ye holy

Sanctify yourselves therefore, and be ye holy: for I [am] the LORD your God.” Leviticus 20:7
But as he which hath called you is holy, so be ye holy in all manner of conversation; Because it is written, Be ye holy; for I am holy.” 1 Peter 1:15-16
You know, words have meaning.  All too often when we don't take the time to understand their meaning, and we rush over them, and miss their meaning... we can get ourselves in a bit of a quandary.
"Holy".  What do you think of when you hear the word?  How do you responds when you hear the command, "Be ye holy... as Your Father in heaven?"
People have said to me in the past that they can't believe the Bible because it tells them to be perfect and holy and everyone agrees that those are two impossible things... therefore, the bible isn't meant to be taken literally.  If we "try our best" and are "generally a good person" then we can expect to be afforded entrance in to heaven; that is, if there is one.
Hogwash.  (which, by the way, is another way of saying mire.  You know, the stuff the swine roll around in to cover themselves and keep themselves cool.  It's mud, but also more than mud.)
If the Word of God says that we are to "be holy" then we are.  So then what is the applicable definition of "holy..."

Proverbs 3:5 - Trust in the Lord

Trust is not something that you give... it is something that you do.
Trust in the Lord with all your heart.” (Prov. 3:5a)
“What time I am afraid, I will trust in thee.” (Psalm 56:3)
“Commit thy way unto the Lord, trust also in Him, and He shall bring it to pass.” (Psalm 37:5)
You may find a great deal of comfort and command in these verses.  They reinforce our dependence, correctly placed, on the One who created the universe.  They speak about a deep relationship of the heart that places Him first, where He should be.
Misunderstood, they allow you to neglect responsibility.  At least, in the sense of what I have always understood trust to be.
That was, of course, until I was walking my dog one night, having a great conversation with the Man upstairs, when in my heart I came to understand trust in a new way.

The Person of the Holy Spirit

The Holy Spirit is a Person.
Luke 3:22 said that the Holy Spirit descended in a bodily shape.
In Luke 12:12 we see that the Holy Spirit teaches us.
In John  14:26 we read of the Holy Spirit, “But the Comforter, [which is] the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you.”
The Holy Spirit is not some power that a Christian controls, but He is God, and He is the Power by which a Christian should be controlled.
We do not seek to have the Holy Spirit submit unto our will, but we seek to submit unto His.

How did I ever get here?

Have you ever wondered why Christians finds themselves in a difficult period of life?  It almost doesn’t seem fair.
I know that I have both heard – and, if the truth be told – have myself wondered how it can be that non-believers can often seem to be having it “easier” than believers.
I don’t know if I mentioned it before, but I’ll drop in now that if there were ever a purgatory we are in it.  Earth is where heaven and earth collide.  For those who are going on to heaven, this is all the hell we will ever see.  For those not, this is all the heaven they’ll ever see.  So let’s not envy them… but rather, we should pray for them.
But back to my original question… “Why?”
The answer for us lies in the same place it did for Jesus…

Forsaking religion for relationship

We have heard the phrase a lot.  “It isn’t about religion, it’s about relationship.”
People who are knee deep in religion will often not see it.  I know I didn’t when I was.
They will talk about the relationship but still be striving for position.
If you are ever in the position where you find yourself in a place that is all about religion you might want to do like the sons of thunder did…

The advice of a king

be thou strong therefore, and shew thyself a man;”  1 Kings 2:2
When King David was on his way out… when his days on this earth were numbered… he wanted to make sure his son got this one thing straight.
Be strong.  Show yourself to be a man.
Whenever a man of God gives Godly counsel to his son the devil wants to come in and twist it.
Being strong does not mean…

The purifying power of praise

“[As] the fining pot for silver, and the furnace for gold; so [is] a man to his praise.” Proverbs 27:21
The fining pot was hot.  So was the furnace.
Both were used to release the impurities from the precious metals.  The temperature was turned up slowly so that the metal itself was not destroyed by the heat.
Both were long intense processes.  They needed to be watched by the refiner so that just at the right time the metal was poured into a mold or cooled so it could be fashioned.
Praise does the same thing for a man.

Servants to Sons

He that delicately bringeth up his servant from a child shall have him become [his] son at the length.” Proverbs 29:21
When we come to a find a true relationship in Jesus… accepting Him as our personal Savior, we often realize that all along, even in our worst days… He was there for us.  He had a plan for us.
Some of us have “worse” stories than others.  Some of us were raised in good Christian homes.  Some were raised in religious homes.
Wherever we were raised, until we became a child of God through the blood of Jesus we were servants.  We were trying to please someone.  Whether it be our parents, friends, people we looked up to, our bosses, the leaders of our church… God… we were serving.

Pleading the Blood of Jesus over us

As Christians we may be very familiar with the concept of pleading the blood of Jesus over a situation or a person.  We may have even prayed for ourselves to be “covered by the blood of Jesus.”
We know that the atoning blood of Jesus can “cleanse us from all unrighteousness.” (1 John 1:9)
The concept of the blood of a covenant is seen in Exodus 24:8 when “Moses took the blood, and sprinkled [it] on the people, and said, Behold the blood of the covenant.”
Jesus reinforces the blood covenant at the last Supper when “[he took] the cup, when he had supped, saying, This cup is the new testament in my blood.” 1 Corinthians 11:25
But do you know who the first group of people to plead the blood of Jesus, the blood of the new covenant, over themselves were?...

Have ye any fig trees?

I love the promises of God.  While you may not have an actual fig tree… figuratively speaking you may have many.  The question is… have you been caring for it?
Why?  Because the Word of God has some encouragement for you if you have…

A continual dropping.

How many men have read the following verse and used it to say “Amen!” because they took it to mean that a nagging wife was just like a bad day of rain?
A continual dropping in a very rainy day and a contentious woman are alike.” Proverbs 27:15
Why not look for something good in it?  Contentious means to strive.  Didn’t Jacob strive with God?

What is the one thing you desire?

David, King of Israel, had figured out that it wasn’t winning battles… though he was undefeated as a King.
He figured out that it was building a temple… his son would do that.
He even figured out that it wasn’t to return to the fields where he spent the days of his youth to reminisce or rest.
After all that the Lord had given him, David desired one thing…

What God does with a mess

If you have ever caused one, know someone who might be considered one, or your life seems to always be one…
Be encouraged to know that God is in the business of taking a mess and making it into a message.

Check for thorns

[As] a thorn goeth up into the hand of a drunkard, so [is] a parable in the mouth of fools.” Proverbs 26:9
I love this imagery.  Picture a drunk guy… really wasted… not just a buzz.  He grabs a hold of rose, forgetting about the thorns… and watches as it red appears not just from the petals, but from his hand.
He laughs it off… maybe makes a joke.  But quickly dismisses it because he can’t feel it anyway.  He is too intoxicated.
But he will sober up…

When you feel like it is over…

Have you ever been at the point where your expectations have been dashed?  When you have these great plans but they just didn’t seem to pan out?  When you gave it all you had… placed big bets… trusted people… and then… nothing.
You are in good company.  And, by the way… just as deceived.
There was this guy named Peter.

Are you “such a man?”

In my own life I have battled many times with pride.  Win some… lose some.  The scriptures have a certain way of always ringing true.  Pride does go before destruction.  And God will exalt the lowly or humble.  A prideful man wants to be known.  A humble man wants Jesus to be known.
There is an instance in the Bible when we see someone given an amazing blessing… he hosts the Passover meal for Jesus the night he was betrayed.  And do you know what his name was?...

The parable of the virgins and lamps…

If you are not familiar with the parable of the wise and foolish virgins you can read it in Matthew 25: 1-13.
I found three interesting points that I had not noticed before when I read through this today.
First in verses 3- 4:
They that [were] foolish took their lamps, and took no oil with them: But the wise took oil in their vessels with their lamps.”
First… the foolish virgins took no oil with them.  They thought that what was burning in their lamps at the time was enough.
Have you ever done that?...  Acted as though the time that you had spent with the Lord would carry you through the dark night… so you failed to spend time with Him that day?  Not good.  It is supposed to be daily bread.  People who speak about having the anointing will tell you that it is not something that always abides… it can wear off.  You need to get more oil

Faith is a matter of the law.

I had never considered before that faith was a matter of the Law.  I had been taking in so much about Grace that I would never have considered this.  Still, the Word of God is true:
Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye pay tithe of mint and anise and cummin, and have omitted the weightier [matters] of the law, judgment, mercy, and faith: these ought ye to have done, and not to leave the other undone.” Matthew 23:23
Judgment and mercy I can understand.  They just cry out “courtroom!”  But faith… a matter of the law.
How?

What it means to receive.

When we talked about the key to unanswered prayer, we said that it was believing or acting according to your confession.  That hope was the active part of faith.
When we believe… we do.  When we hope… we do.
And when we believe there is a promise…
And all things, whatsoever ye shall ask in prayer, believing, ye shall receive.” Matt 21:22
What does it mean to receive?

Praying in Jesus’ Name

And in that day ye shall ask me nothing. Verily, verily, I say unto you, Whatsoever ye shall ask the Father in my name, he will give [it] you.” John 16:23
Pretty bold promise.  Whatsoever covers a whole lot.  And thank God that it does!
But why is it that praying in the Name of Jesus is so powerful?

Intercessory Prayer

For [there is] one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus;” 1 Tim 2:5

Who [is] he that condemneth? [It is] Christ that died, yea rather, that is risen again, who is even at the right hand of God, who also maketh intercession for us.” Romans 8:34
There are three levels of intercessory prayer.   And each requires a different level of qualification.  And those levels of qualification are a reflection of levels of authority.
Why?
Because we are at war… and we are in training… and we are trained to be specialists.  What are the levels and how do we get qualified?

Corporate Prayer

The word “corporate” means united in one body comes from the root “corpus” which means body. When a business in incorporated it brings all of the parts together to form one entity.  And that is what the Body of Christ was meant to be: One Entity.
There is amazing power when the Body of Christ comes together in unity, as one entity to pray.  It disrupts the kingdom of darkness, thwarts the plans of the enemy, and releases the power of God in an amazing way.
Consider the following.  Peter was captured and locked up.  The church had no means of fighting for him until they realize that the fight was not one in the flesh, but in the spirit.  So they took the fight where it belonged.

Sermon delivered on Prayer, 10/16/11

The following sermon was delivered on 10/16/2011.  After the service people were asked to come forward for prayer if they needed healing for their backs, arms, or legs.  At least three people saw their arms or legs grow to equal lengths.

After listening to this myself... it is obvious that it not what was said, or who said it, but WHO it honored.

I pray that anyone who hears it will be encouraged... In Jesus' Name.

Prayer as a weapon in spiritual warfare

Howbeit this kind goeth not out but by prayer and fasting.” Matt 17:21
Jesus had just come down from the mountain with Pete, Jim, and John where He was busy being transfigured.  Here is the scene He comes upon.
And when they were come to the multitude, there came to him a [certain] man, kneeling down to him, and saying, Lord, have mercy on my son: for he is lunatick, and sore vexed: for ofttimes he falleth into the fire, and oft into the water. And I brought him to thy disciples, and they could not cure him. Then Jesus answered and said, O faithless and perverse generation, how long shall I be with you? how long shall I suffer you? bring him hither to me. And Jesus rebuked the devil; and he departed out of him: and the child was cured from that very hour. Then came the disciples to Jesus apart, and said, Why could not we cast him out? And Jesus said unto them, Because of your unbelief:… Howbeit this kind goeth not out but by prayer and fasting.” Matthew 17:14-21
First we have to look at something here.  No one acknowledges that they are dealing with the devil until Jesus shows up.

Prayer is the grammar of heaven.

“Grammar” is the body of rules, expectations, and principles used to determine a language so that it can be understood.  In short, it is what makes communication possible.  Without grammar, you could say whatever you wanted… and no one could understand.
Prayer is the grammar of heaven.
 It contains inflections, tone, position…

Suffering IS Prayer

God is love.” (1 John 4:8,16) “Love is longsuffering.” (1 Corinthians 13:4) Therefore, God suffers long.
And in the conversation that is prayer, when He is long suffering, we too suffer long.
We go through hard times.  Hard times that others would say we brought on.  Hard times that are brought on by our weaknesses, our mistakes, our own flesh and desires.
But God is not outside of those hard times.
When we make the wrong choices, when we slip… we change the conversation.
